Dragons Season Ends in CAA Quarterfinals vs. Hofstra
3/8/2020 1:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hofstra opened the second half with seven straight points and went on to defeat Drexel, 61-43, in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Hercules Tires CAA Championships at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.
The Dragons (14-19) trailed by just three points at the half after holding the top-seeded Pride to just 11 field goals in the first half. The Dragons scored 11-straight points and held Hofstra without a point for a span of more than six minutes early in the game. The Pride (24-8) was able to get the lead back late in the half on a three-pointer by Jalen Ray and went to the break ahead 25-22.
Hofstra's Eli Pemberton had a huge start to the second half. The senior scored seven-straight points to start the half as Hofstra's lead swelled to 10 points. Zach Walton ended the run with a three-pointer to cut it to seven, but the Dragons could not get any closer the rest of the way as the Pride advanced to Monday's semifinals. The Pride was 16-for-30 in the second half.
Drexel's offense couldn't get going for most of the afternoon. The Dragons were an uncharacteristic 2-for-22 from long range and shot just 32 percent in the game. Walton had a solid game, picking up a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. James Butler also had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. It was his second-straight 14-rebound performance and his 20th double-double of the year. The junior finished the season with 387 rebounds, the third best single-season total in school history. Only Malik Rose (409 in 1995-96 and 404 in 1994-95) has had more rebounds in one season at Drexel than Butler.
Pemberton was one of four Hofstra players in double figures with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Desure Buie and Ray each had 14. Buie also handed out eight assists and grabbed six boards.
The Pride will play in the CAA Semifinals on Sunday against the winner of the Delaware and College of Charleston game.
