Connor Schmidt Repeats as WPGA Amateur Champion

SEWICKLY, Pa. - Drexel senior Connor Schmidt shot a 2-under-par 68 in the final round to repeat at the WPGA Amateur champion. Schmidt finished the two-day event with a 6-under par 136 at the Allegheny Country Club. He two putted the final hole for a par as he won the tournament by two strokes.

Schmidt's outstanding performance started on Monday when the Venetia, Pa. native shot a 66. He took a one-stroke lead into Tuesday's action and put the pressure on his opponents right away. Schmidt made birdies on the first two holes before carding a bogey on three. He rebounded with four straight birdies to take control of the tournament and finished the front with a 30, five shots under par.

On the back nine, Schmidt started with a rare double-bogey, but rattled off five straight pars on the way to his second straight title. He became the first repeat winner of the tournament since Nathan Smith won the event four straight times from 2007 to 2010. Arnold Palmer and Bob Reilly also won it four years in a row.

Last summer, Schmidt picked up his first WPGA Amateur win at Oakmont Country Club. Schmidt finished two shots better than three of his competitors.
