Women’s Basketball Holds Off William & Mary for CAA Road Win on Saturday, 64-58

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (6-2, 3-0 CAA) held off the William & Mary Tribe (4-6, 1-4 CAA) on Saturday, Jan. 16 from Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va. to pick up the CAA road win by a final of 64-58.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Four Dragons finished in double figures in the road win at William & Mary. A three-point game at halftime, Drexel opened the third quarter on a 13-0 run to push its advantage to 16 points, 43-27. DU only made four field goals in a slow start to the fourth as W&M crept within three, 55-52, with 2:27 to play. But Drexel made seven free throws down the stretch, including 5-of-6 from senior Mariah Leonard, to hold off the Tribe.
* Leonard finished with her first collegiate double-double behind career highs 17 points and 11 rebounds. Playing in her home state, the Virginia native finished 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line along with a game-high three steals, tying a career best.
* Junior Keishana Washington scored 13 points on the afternoon including two first-quarter free throws to get DU off to a hot start. The junior guard also had three rebounds and three steals.
* Senior Kayla Bacon scored in double figures for the third time of the season and her career as she finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and three boards.
* Senior Hannah Nihill notched 10 points, a game-high six assists, five rebounds and two steals. It marked her ninth career game and third this season with at least five points, five rebounds and five assists.
* Junior Kate Connolly recorded eight points, two rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
GAMEPLAY
Q1 /
Washington knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to pick up where she left off in Drexel's last game. Leonard capped the 8-0 run, adding some early points in the paint to give the Dragons an 8-4 advantage at the first media break. Bacon started another 7-0 stretch for DU out of the break with four quick points while Hendrixson connected on a trey with 3:31 to go, 15-4. W&M ended the quarter on a 7-0 run as Drexel could not score in the final three and a half minutes. DU took a 15-11 edge into the second quarter.
Q2 /
Washington ended the scoring drought with a baseline jumper at the 9:06 mark in the second. Hyduke pushed the lead to 20-13 with a trey on the next possession. Over the next 90 seconds, W&M evened the scored with a 7-0 run, 20-20. The Tribe took their first lead since the opening field goal as Bacon added two baskets for Drexel, continuing her 4-of-4 start off the bench. Nihill scored the next six points to help regain the lead as DU held a 30-27 advantage at halftime.

Drexel started the second half on a 13-0 run to take a 43-27 lead. Connolly had six points in the stretch while Leonard contributed four and Washington added a three-point play. W&M was without a field goal over the final 3:34. Leonard (8), Connolly (6) and Washington (5) handled all the third period scoring for DU. Drexel owned a 49-37 edge after three quarters.

DU's scoring dropped off a bit in the fourth quarter, managing only four points over the opening five minutes while holding on to the lead, 53-46. The Tribe slowly fought back to pull within three with under three to play, 55-52. W&M converted on seven of its final 10 shots but the Dragons kept them at bay at the free-throw line. Leonard picked up her 10th rebound with 18 seconds left to get the double-double and her career-high 11th board with eight seconds on the clock. She hit her final two free throws to set a new career high with 17 points.

* DU is now 6-0 when scoring at least 60 points.
* The Dragons' largest lead was 16 with 6:34 left in the third quarter, capped off by the team's largest run of the game, 13-0.
* Drexel led for 35:55 of the game's 40 minutes.
