PHILADELPHIA – William & Mary rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to stun Drexel, 69-64 on Sunday. With the loss, the Tribe earned a split of the weekend series. Drexel fell to 1-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 6-5 overall. William & Mary is now 4-6 and 2-3 in league play.
James Butler scored with 4:07 to play to give Drexel a 61-52 lead. That would be the last field goal of the day for the Dragons. William & Mary chipped away despite not making a bucket for the last 7:25 of the game. The Tribe scored the final 19 points from the free throw line as they continued to drive and draw fouls. Freshman Connor Kochera scored 14 of his game-high 26 points from the charity stripe, all coming in the second half.
Drexel's Mate Okros had a big day in the loss. The sophomore set personal bests with 17 points and five 3-pointers. He hit three straight three-pointers in the first half to give Drexel the lead which they held until the final minute. Camren Wynter hit double figures with 11 assists for the second-straight game. James Butler recorded his fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The graduate student moved into 10th on Drexel's career rebounding list.
Drexel seemed to have control late in the game. The Dragons scored six-straight points to extend its lead to nine. They held the Tribe for scoreless for almost three minutes during that span before Kochera started a 14-0 run with a pair of free throws. He had nine of the team's 14 points during the stretch that put the Tribe up 66-61 with :28 seconds to play. Drexel tried to get back in it as Zach Walton made three free throws after being fouled in the act of shooting a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two. However, William & Mary iced the game at the stripe and picked up the win.
