Women’s Basketball Defeats Elon on Sunday to Split Weekend Series, 55-44

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (7-4, 4-2 CAA) defeated the Elon University Phoenix (6-4, 2-2 CAA) to take the Sunday matinee by a final of 55-44, splitting the weekend series.
HIGHLIGHTS
* The Dragons led for 34:56 minutes on Sunday to cruise to a conference victory, improving to 4-2 in the CAA. An early 7-0 run in the first quarter led to DU taking a 9-4 lead as the squad held on to the advantage for the rest of the game. Drexel kept Elon to just 44 points on 16-of-43 shooting including 2-of-13 from three-point range.
* Senior Hannah Nihill tied her career high with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting including 2-of-2 from deep and 4-of-4 from the line. The senior also had four rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.
* Senior Mariah Leonard also finished in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the line. Leonard pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. The senior scored six points in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win.
* Junior Maura Hendrixson connected on three three-pointers for nine points along with five assists, four steals, three rebounds and one block.
* Drexel held Elon's leading scorer Jaylin Powell, who hit Saturday's game-winning three-pointer in the final seconds, to 3-of-9 shooting on Sunday for 11 points as Elon's only double-figure scorer.

Trailing 4-2, the Dragon used a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 advantage with 3:28 to play. Hendrixson, Hyduke and Nihill all made treys in the period as the latter scored nine points in the frame. DU held Elon without a field goal for a five-plus minute stretch before Kayla Liles converted a pair of layups in the final two minutes for the Phoenix. Drexel had a 17-10 lead after 10 minutes.
Q2 /
Washington connected on two three-pointers to begin the second period. Elon then called a timeout with 7:21 on the clock as Drexel took a 23-10 lead. Hendrixson also hit her second trey of the day in the period. DU held Elon to just two field goals in the quarter in addition to a pair of free throws. The Dragons owned a 30-16 lead at halftime. Drexel hit 6-of-11 from deep in the opening half.

Drexel and Elon kept things relatively even in the third quarter as Drexel expanded its lead by one, 43-28. Nihill was 3-of-5 in the period with a three-pointer while Hendrixson added her third and final trey.
Q4 /
Leonard started the fourth with a pair of layups to increase the edge to 19. Elon then went on a 7-0 run to cut back into it near the midway point of the quarter, 47-35. Another short 5-0 Phoenix run made it 51-40 with 3:23 to play. That 11-point advantage carried for the remainder of the contest as Drexel won, 55-44.

* The Dragons forced 22 Elon turnovers and scored 15 points off those miscues.
* Elon outscored Drexel in the paint, 28-18, on fast breaks, 13-2, and on the bench, 22-5.
