HARRISONBURG, Va. - Camren Wynter scored 29 points, but James Madison defeated the Dragons, 73-64, at the Atlantic Union Bank Center on Sunday. The Dukes opened up a 17-point lead in the first half before the Dragons battled back. JMU (9-5) from wire-to-wire as they improved to 4-1 in the CAA. Drexel is now 7-6 overall and 2-4 in league play.
James Madison raced out to an early lead behind the shooting of Vado Morse. The transfer from Mount St. Mary's was 4-for-4 with three 3-pointer in the first 4:08 of the game. The Dukes eventually opened up a 17-point lead at 33-16 with just over seven minutes to play in the first half and looked to take control of the game. However, Camren Wynter helped get Drexel back in the game on the offensive end with eight points over the final minute of the half. The defense tightened up as well and held the Dukes potent offense without a field goal for a span of more than seven minutes. Drexel would cut the lead to one before eventually heading to intermission down 39-32.
The Dragons were within striking distance the rest of the way. The deficit seemed to be within two to six point the entire second half before the Dukes finally put the game out of reach in the closing minutes. Terell Strickland hit a big three-pointer from the corner to give JMU at 67-60 lead with 1:16 to go. Drexel would get no closer as the Dukes made six free throws in the closing seconds.
Wynter had another outstanding game. The junior was 10-for-21 from the floor and also had six rebounds and three assists. Zach Walton contributed 15 points and had a strong second half. They were the only two Dragons to reach double figures in scoring.
Matt Lewis and Morse each had 15 points. Strickland and Julien Wooden chipped in with 11 points. JMU forced 15 Drexel turnovers, 12 of those coming in the first half.
Drexel will be back on the road next weekend when it travels north to take on Hofstra. The team will meet on both Saturday and Sunday in Hempstead, N.Y.
