BROOKLINE, Mass. – Playing a game less than 15 miles from her hometown, Gwyn Godin tapped home game-winner late in the second overtime as the Drexel Dragons downed the Northeastern Huskies 2-1 on a cold Thursday evening in New England.
"(It was a) hard fought battle, like all of our other conference games. Really proud of our team and they way they continue to battle," said head coach Ray Goon. "So happy for Gwyn as she's worked as hard as anyone and for her to be able to get the game-winner in her hometown is really special."
Setting up the golden goal, Drexel won a free kick at the top of the offensive third. Lily Dunbar sent the ball into the mixer where it bounced around a couple times before being deflected onto the foot of Godin on the goal line, who touched the ball in for the victory.
Trailing 1-0 midway through the first half, DU knotted the score in the 22nd minute as Godin served in a corner to the top of the six-yard area that was headed by Kylie Kutz. The ball grazed the inside of the left post before finding its way into the net for a 1-1 scoreline.
As the second half wore on, the Huskies began to push the pace, but the Dragons were able to withstand the effort. Each team had a pair of brilliant scoring chances in the final seven minutes, including a one-vs-one effort for Anna Salvucci and a corner in the final minute for Drexel, but the defenses and goalies on both ends were up to the task.
In the opening minute of the second overtime, Northeastern earned a corner kick which was sent in beautifully, but was initially punched out by Molly Piso. Off the rebound, Piso, seeing action in just her third match of the season, made a leaping save off her line to prevent the Huskies from ending the contest.
Drexel is in action next with a Senior Day celebration on Sunday, October 31 when it hosts Elon. Opening tap is slated for 12:00 p.m.
