The Drexel University women's basketball team continues it's three-game season opening homestand, hosting City 6 rival, Saint Joseph's on Friday, November 12 at 8:00 p.m.
About Drexel
Drexel enters play 0-1 on the season following a 52-50 loss against Marist on Tuesday. Tessa Brugler led the Dragons, posting a double-double behind 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The Dragons return a loaded roster for the 2021-22 season. CAA Defensive Player of the Year and First Team honoree, Hannah Nihill returns for DU. Keishana Washington, who was the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player and a Third Team All-Conference selection is also back in the fold. Joining them are Mariah Leonard, Kate Connolly, and Maura Hendrixson, who each started 16 or more games a season ago. The trio has also each played at least 63 games in a Drexel uniform.
Drexel welcomes three new players to the roster, one of them with significant experience as Brugler joins the team as a graduate transfer after spending the last four years at Bucknell. For the Bison, Brugler was a two-time All-Patriot League selection (2020-21 First Team, 2019-20 Third Team) and a member of the All-Conference Defensive Team as a senior. She averaged a double-double last year behind 13.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Coming to the Dragons as freshmen are Momo LaClair and Sira Ba. LaClair is from Syracuse, N.Y. and helped her Jamesville-DeWitt team to a pair of state championships. Ba hails from Montreal, Que., led her provincial team to the national finals, and has played on the Canadian U19 team.
In addition to the returning starters and newcomers, DU sees Brianne Borcky, Chloe Hodges, Tori Hyduke, Hetta Saatman, Erin Sweeney, and Jasmine Valentine all come back. Saatman and Valentine each drew starting assignments at times last season and five of the six played in 10 or more contests.

Scouting SJU
Saint Joseph's enters 1-0 on the season following a 84-49 win against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday. The Hawks were picked 10th of 14 teams in the preseason Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll on the heels of a 7-10 record a year ago that saw them go 5-9 in A10 play.
SJU returns a large chunk of its roster, including 84 percent of its scoring from last season, led by Kaliah Henderson and Katie Jekot, who averaged 11.4 and 9.6 points per game respectively. Gabby Smalls led the team in rebounding in 2020-21 at 6.9 a contest while Jekot dished 4.1 assists an outing.
In the game against UMES, Jekot led the Hawks with 16 points while Talya Brugler, the younger sister of Drexel's Tessa Brugler, opened her collegiate career, scoring 14.
1991 alumna Cindy Griffin is in her 21st season at the helm of the Hawks and has a record of 338-277. She led her teams to the 2013 and 2014 NCAA tournament and the WNIT 10 times.
All-Time Series
Friday is the 20th all-time matchup between the Dragons and Hawks with SJU holding a 10-9 edge. The teams last met on December 1, 2019, a 62-52 Drexel win on the second day of the Saint Joseph's Classic. DU has won four in a row in the series.
