Nihill Scores 1,000th Point as Women's Basketball Holds Off UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Hannah Nihill became the 26th member of the Drexel women's basketball 1,000 point club as the Dragons held off the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 65-60 on Saturday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
- A pair of Dragons recorded a double-double. Tessa Brugler scored 16 and had 11 rebounds for her third game with 10+ points and 10+ rebounds of the season. Mariah Leonard posted 10 points and grabbed 14 boards for her second career double-double.
- For Leonard, the 14 rebounds are a career-high and included eight on the offensive glass.
- Nihill scored 15 in the contest, the sixth of them being her milestone point. She also dished a season-high seven assists.
- Keishana Washington netted 13 for DU.
- It was the third consecutive game Drexel had four players score 10 or more.
- Drexel committed a season-low nine turnovers in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing by two entering the final period, Drexel shot well, hitting a pair of threes and using the offensive glass to its advantage, starting the fourth with a 14-6 run. UMES did not go away, but DU was up to the challenge, tightening up on the defensive end as the contest entered its final minutes.
- Drexel also sealed the win at the line, hitting 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter and 12-of-14 in the second half.
- The Dragons struggled with their shot early on, as a 6-for-17 performance form the floor in the first quarter saw Drexel trail 14-12 at the end of 10 minutes. The teams effectively traded buckets in the second period as UMES held a 28-27 lead at halftime.
- DU got off to a hot start in the third quarter, making five of its first nine shots from the field as well as five makes from the line, turning a one point deficit into a three point lead by the media timeout. As part of the spurt, Nihill hit a jumper in the paint for her 1,000th career point. The Hawks continued to hang around, however, and took a 48-46 lead after the third frame.
