Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team plays its final game at The Dana on Mission Bay Holiday Tournament and also wraps a stretch of three in a row away from home, facing the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday, November 27 at 5:00 p.m. EST
About Drexel
Drexel enters play 3-2 overall and is coming off a 65-53 setback against Nebraska on Saturday. Hannah Nihill scored a season-high 19 points against the Huskers.
The Dragons usually do a good job of taking care of the ball, as evidenced by the 13.2 turnovers per game the team averaged heading into Friday being among the top-40 nationally. Against the Cornhuskers, though, Drexel was at it's very best in holding on to the ball. DU committed just two turnovers, the fewest in any game for any NCAA team across all divisions thusfar in 2021-22. The feat was accomplished just three times last season and matches the lowest total since Northern Arizona coughed the ball up only a single time against Weber State on February 8, 2020.
Drexel relies heavily on their starting lineup this year with Tessa Brugler, Kate Connolly, Mariah Leonard, Nihill, and Keishana Washington all averaging more than 30 minutes a game. In particular Washington (37.0), Leonard (36.8), Brugler (35.8), and Nihill (35.4) hold down four of the top five spots in minutes per game in the CAA this season. The quartet all rank among the top-50 in the NCAA in minutes.
Scouting Fresno State
Fresno State enters play 2-3 overall following a 68-64 loss against the University of San Diego on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs were picked first in the Mountain West Preseason Poll, garnering 13 of the 27 possible first place votes. Twin sisters Hanna and Haley Cavinder were selected to the preseason All-Conference team with Haley tabbed as the MWC Preseason Player of the Year.
Not surprisingly, the duo leads Fresno State in scoring with Haley netting 19.2 points per game and Hanna tallying 15.2. Amiee Book provides a solid third scoring option at 7.2 a night. Haley Cavinder is a triple-threat also leading FSU in reboundng at 10.4 an outing and has dished 33 assists, twice the next highest total on the team.
One thing the Bulldogs have done well is take care of the basketball, averaging just 11.8 turnovers per game, helping Fresno State to score 72.4 points an outing. They have not forced a lot of opponent miscues, however, forcing 12.4 TO/contest. That, combined with a -5.0 rebounding margin has resulted in surrendering 72.4 points a game.
Jaime White is in her eighth season as the head coach at Fresno State with a 143-86 record with the Bulldogs and a 260-214 mark in 16 seasons overall as a collegiate head coach with a previous stop at Northern Colorado. Her FSU teams have enjoyed a lot of success with three, 20-win seasons and five trips to the WNIT.
All-Time Series
Saturday is the first meeting between Drexel and Fresno State in more than 20 years. The Bulldogs downed the Dragons 66-47 on December 30, 1999 in a game played during the Wildcat Christmas Classic at Villanova.
Up Next
The Dragons return from the West Coast to battle Dartmouth on Tuesday, November 30. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
