PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team clinched a playoff berth for the second consecutive year after defeating the Delaware Blue Hens in double overtime, 2-1, at Vidas Field. With the win, the Dragons move to 8-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play.
The Blue Hens controlled much of the first half, possessing the ball for a majority of it and also taking a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
Drexel scored its first goal in the 58th minute. Daniel Nesseler won a fifty-fifty ball from a Delaware goal kick and played it to Kyle Tucker, about 10 yards ahead. Tucker, completely unguarded, took four touches and took a shot from 40 yards out. The shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced into the goal to give Drexel its equalizer. The goal was Tucker's fourth of the year, and the assist was the second of the year and first of the day for Nesseler.
The game was locked at one apiece after 90 minutes of play. In overtime, the Dragons continued to apply pressure on the tiring Delaware defense. In the 98th minute, Drexel received its first chance to defeat the Blue Hens in penalty fashion. Nesseler took the shot but the Delaware keeper dove to his right to save it.
In the second overtime, Drexel only needed one and a half minutes. Nesseler started the play on the right side of the field and played a ball to the center, where Chris Donovan headed the ball into the back of the net to give Drexel the golden goal. The goal is Donovan's 13th of the year, and it was also the 10th game-winning goal of his career.
The Dragons advance to the conference tournament for the second consecutive year. The last time the Dragons secured a conference tournament berth in back-to-back years was in 2012 and 2013. In those two years, the Dragons won the CAA Championship once and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Next up for the Dragons is the CAA Tournament. While the Dragons do not know who their opponent in the semifinal will be, they know they will be competing on Friday, Nov. 11.
