Dragons Open Season With 103-74 Win Against Neumann

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a resounding 103-74 win against Neumann University on Tuesday night. The Dragons unveiled their CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament banners prior to the opening tip off.
Six players scored in double figures as the Dragons defeated the Knights, whose head coach is Drexel graduate Jim Rullo. James Butler led the way with 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting. Xavier Bell scored 14 points, while Camreny Wynter had 13 points, eight assists and no turnovers. Melik Martin, in his first game as a Dragon, tallied 13 points, while Lamar Odom had a team-high four 3-pointers for 12 points. Big man Amari Williams contributed 10 points and had three rejections.
Drexel shot 56 percent in the game and had 11 3-pointers. The Dragons committed just two turnovers, the lowest total since the team joined the Colonial Athletic Association prior to the 2001-02 season. They also handed out 24 assists.
The Knights scored the first five points of the game and trailed by just one seven minutes in. However, the Dragons rattled off 10-straight points to take the lead and never looked back. The lead swelled to as many as 35 late in the game. All 14 Drexel players played at least two and a half minutes in the game and no one played more than 24 minutes as Zach Spiker was able to use a number of combinations throughout the game.
The Knights were led by Tyler Norwood, who scored 29 points and made eight 3-pointers.
Before the game, Drexel had its banner unveiling ceremony which featured Drexel alumni from the last 50 years, including members of its NCAA Tournament teams. It was the first time since before the pandemic that crowds were allowed back in the building, and just under 2,000 were in attendance at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Tuesday night.
