Washington Scores 1,000th Point as Dragons Outlast Yale

PHILADELPHIA - Keishana Washington became the 27th member of the Drexel women's basketball 1,000 point club as the Dragons beat the Yale Bulldogs 59-52 on Tuesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Washington led all scorers with 25 points including 13 in the final 13 minutes of the game. She also pulled in a season-high eight rebounds.
- Tessa Brugler tallied 10 points and grabbed 12 boards for her fifth double-double of the year.
- As a team, Drexel outrebounded Yale 49-27 and shot 10-for-21 from three-point range.
- DU is now 8-2, matching the 2016-17 team for the best 10-game start in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Dragons trailed by a point heading into he fourth quarter, but quickly erased the deficit as Kate Connolly hit a three to get the final stanza started. Yale responded scoring seven of the next nine points to go up 49-46 just past the midway point.
- DU leaned on Washington, who went on a personal 7-0 run to get Drexel up by four. Following a Bulldogs three that sliced the lead to one with two minutes left, the Dragons missed their next attempt, but got the offensive rebound. Calling a timeout, DU pushed the ball into the post for Brugler who drew a pair of defenders. She kicked it to a wide open Maura Hendrixson who drilled a triple for her only points of the evening and some breathing room for the Dragons.
- Drexel fell behind early, but a 9-0 spurt pushed DU up 14-8 on a trey from Washington with 2:42 left in the opening frame. The run continued through the end of the stanza with the Dragons holding a 19-11 lead after 10 minutes.
- DU didn't slow down as the second period began, netting nine of the first 10 points, taking a 28-12 lead thanks to a put-back layup from Mariah Leonard with 6:32 to go before halftime, forcing a Yale timeout.
- The Bulldogs battled back, using a 12-0 push, closing to 31-24 with just less than two minutes remaining in the second.
- Washington's milestone bucket came at a big time for Drexel as Yale had pulled to within a pair before she connected on a trey with 3:03 remaining in the third.
