Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team plays its first game in more than three weeks and opens Colonial Athletic Association action, taking on the College of Charleston Cougars on Friday, January 7, 2022. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
About Drexel
Keishana Washington scored 25 points and became the 27th member of the Drexel women's basketball 1,000 point club as the Dragons beat the Yale Bulldogs 59-52 on December 14, the most recent game for DU.
With Washington's 1,000th career point, she and Hannah Nihill are the sixth pair of DU players to hit the mark in the same season and the first since Sarah Curran and Rachel Pearson both connected for their milestone point in 2015-16. Hollie Mershon and Taylor Wooten both did it in 2012-13 with Kamile Nacickaite and Jasmina Roseel accomplishing the feat in 2010-11. Prior to that, Mikki Miller and Maureen Michaels both hit the milestone in 1999-2000. The first time it happened was Kitty Dougherty and Barbara Alexander in 1988-89.
At 8-2, Drexel has tied the 2016-17 team for the best 10-game start in program history. That team went on to open the year 10-2 on its way to a 22-11 overall mark and the second round of the WNIT.
Against the Dragons, Yale shot 8-for-27 from three-point range. Combined with the defense versus Longwood and Maine from beyond the arc, the last three opponents for Drexel are 10-for-67 (14.9 percent) from distance. Overall on the year, DU ranks 26th nationally as teams are shooting 24.2 percent against on three-pointers. During the Dragons current five-game winning streak, the opposition has connected on just 18.3 percent (19-for-104) of its treys.
Scouting Charleston
Charleston is 8-3 overall, most recently defeating Florida A&M 83-60 on December 19. The Cougars have won five consecutive games, their longest streak since the 2009-10 season.
C of C is a high-powered offense, led by Jenna Annecchiarico who averages 15.0 points per game. She is followed closely by Anika McGarity at 14.8 a night. Peyton Martin and Arynn Eady are also in double figures, tallying 12.7 and 10.5 per contest, while three more players score eight a game or more. Martin leads the team with 10.5 rebounds per game. It is worth noting that Martin has not played since November 30. Annecchiarico has dished 71 assists this year to lead the CAA in total dimes.
Despite the gaudy offensive numbers and record, Charleston ranks in the middle of the pack in the NCAA NET ratings, entering Friday's game 163rd. The Cougars have only played one team ranked above them in the NET with two of their wins coming against non-Division I opponents. Regardless of the level of competition, C of C has been excellent this season at taking the ball away from its opponents and limiting its own turnovers. Charleston leads the nation in steals per game at (14.8) and turnover margin (11.8), while sitting fourth in turnovers forced (24.7).
Robin Harmony is in her third season at the helm of the Cougars with a record of 27-29. Overall, she is in her 15th season as a collegiate head coach, coming to C of C following six years at Lamar, where she guided her teams to three consecutive 20-win seasons.
All-Time Series
Friday is the 15th all-time meeting between the Dragons and Cougars. Drexel holds a 10-4 advantage and won the last game between the two schools on March 7, 2020, a 72-60 victory that clinched the CAA regular season title.
Up Next
Drexel wraps its two-game road trip, heading to Wilmington, N.C. to take on UNCW on Sunday, January 9. Tipoff from Trask Arena is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
