Women’s Basketball Tripped Up at Towson on Sunday

TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (10-7, 7-5 CAA) dropped Sunday's conference affair to the Towson University Tigers (12-5, 7-3 CAA) by a final of 77-62 from SECU Arena in Towson, Md. to split the weekend series.
NOTABLE
* Drexel committed 23 fouls on the day, the second most by the Dragons this season, leading to Towson making 21-of-23 at the free-throw line, the most made against DU on the year.
* The Dragons were limited on the boards as Towson outrebounded them, 44-17.
* Junior Keishana Washington led Drexel with 17 points on 8-of-18 shooting with three assists, a rebound and a steal.
* Junior Kate Connolly went 6-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from deep, for 15 points in the effort with three rebounds.
* Senior Hannah Nihill finished with 11 points, two assists and two rebounds.
* Graduate student Mariah Leonard recorded six points while junior Maura Hendrixson had five.
* Senior Kayla Bacon and sophomore Hetta Saatman each finished with four points.
* Towson had four double-digit scorers: Aleah Nelson (23), Allie Kubek (20), Shavonne Smith (10) and LaKaitlin Wright (10).

Towson called a timeout within the first two minutes after Connolly and Hendrixson hit consecutive shots for the Dragons. The Tigers adjusted out of the early stoppage with a 14-4 run to take a 14-8 advantage with two minutes remaining. Washington committed a late foul with five seconds left that led to a three-point play for Towson but the junior guard made up for it on the other end, beating the buzzer with a long two-pointer. The Tigers led 18-12 after 10 minutes.

Towson started the second quarter on a 9-0 stretch to take a 27-12 advantage. The Dragons responded by making five-straight baskets including a three-point play from Washington. But the Tigers were matching Drexel as TU controlled a comfortable lead with under three minutes to play, 34-23. With 1:21 on the clock, Leonard committed a personal foul and Nihill was called for an intentional foul on the same play, leading to the Tigers making 5-of-5 free throws to go up 42-25. The Dragons trailed 44-27 at halftime. Washington led Drexel with 13 points and was the only Dragon with more than four points.

Connolly scored seven of the first nine points for DU in the third. A Nihill trey pulled Drexel within 10 but five-straight makes for Towson had them up 55-41 with 3:49 at the media timeout. Connolly and Hendrixson added additional three-pointers and Bacon scored four points in the frame. The third came as the Dragons' highest-scoring quarter with 22 points. DU was in a 63-49 hole going into the fourth.

With the game in Towson's control, the margin held in favor of the Tigers. Drexel could not crack the double-digit deficit at any point in the third or fourth quarters. Nihill hit two more three-pointers in the fourth before fouling out late in the contest.

* DU went 0-of-8 from deep in the first half while TU hit 6-of-15 trey attempts. In the second half, the script flipped with Drexel hitting seven treys and Towson going 0-of-6.
* Towson was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line in the first half and 11-of-12 in the second.
