SAN ANTONIO, Texas - After a week of euphoria, excitement and quarantine, the Drexel women's basketball team is ready to play in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Women's Basketball Championships. The Dragons will meet Georgia at noon on Monday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University. The game can be seen live on ESPN2.
The Dragons enter the NCAA Tournament with a 14-8 record. They have won three straight and four of their last five games. Hannah Nihill and Keishana Washington have been Drexel's top two scorers this season. Nihill leads the Dragons with 16 points per game. She was a First Team All-CAA selection and the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Washington had a huge postseason and was named the CAA's Most Outstanding Player at the Championships. She scored 78 points in the three postseason (26 per game) and had back-to-back games of 30 points or more. Mariah Leonard is shooting .500 from the field and leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.
The Dragons hold opponents to just .383 from the floor and .287 from long range. Drexel allows just 57.2 points per game, which is 33rd in the nation.
Georgia, a member of the powerful Southeast Conference, is the third-seed in the region. It is Georgia's highest seed since 2007 and this will be the school's 34th trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs enter the game with a 20-6 record. Jenna Staiti leads three players in double figures with 14.5 points an 8.1 rebounds. She also has 84 blocks. The Lady Bulldogs force 18 turnovers per game and hold opponents to less than 61 points per contest.
Drexel Head Coach Amy Mallon and her team won the Colonial Athletic Association last week, the second title the school has won in its 20 years in the league. Mallon won the title in her first year as a head coach after serving on the Drexel sidelines as an assistant the previous 16 seasons.
