PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team made its long awaited season debut on Friday and defeated La Salle, 2-0. Eline Di Leva and Gabriella Martina each scored second half goals as the Dragons picked up the victory on a crisp afternoon at Buckley Field.
The teams played an even first half with each team managing just three shots and both goalkeepers making a save. Drexel broke the scoring drought late in the third quarter. Di Leva made a good defensive play that caused a La Salle turnover just inside of midfield. She headed towards the La Salle goal, beat a defender and shot it past the goalie's right pad to put the Dragons on the board.
That would prove to be the only goal until the game's final minutes. The Dragons scored an insurance tally when Cailey Lever crossed a ball from the right side of the field. Martina was there to receive it, and the sophomore redirected the shot for a goal from right in front.
Megan Hadfield made two stops in goal for the Dragons. It was the second shutout of her career. Cassie Kincaid made two saves in a losing effort for La Salle. It was also the season-debut for the Explorers.
Drexel is schedule to play Monmouth next Wednesday at Buckley Field. The game begins at 4:30 p.m.
