PHILADELPHIA – Drexel's come-from-behind bid came up short as Delaware defeated the Dragons, 81-77, on Tuesday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons trailed by 22 with 13 minutes to play before cutting Delaware's lead to just four down the stretch. The Blue Hens answered with two consecutive buckets as they handed the Dragons their first home loss of the season. Delaware is now 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dragons fell to 6-6 and 1-1.
Delaware closed the first half on a six-point run to take a 45-32 lead to the locker room. After shooting 57 percent in the first half, the Blue Hens came out hot early in the second half, making seven of their first 10 shots from the floor. Their lead swelled to 22 points after a Ryan Allen steal and lay-up. Despite the deficit, the Dragons showed some fight down the stretch. They chipped away at the lead and when Matey Juric scored on a driving lay-up with 2:44 to play, the Dragons trailed just 72-68. However, Allen made a contested jumper with 2:17 to go to increase the margin to six and Jameer Nelson, Jr., converted five free throws in the final minute to seal the win for the Blue Hens.
Xavier Bell had 18 points to lead Drexel. He was 4-for-6 from deep and sank two 3-pointers in the closing minute. Melik Martin had 16 points off the bench for Drexel, 14 coming in the second half. Martin was 6-for-8 from the floor. Amari Williams scored a career-high 15 points in his first collegiate start. The sophomore replaced the injured James Butler in the starting line-up. He also had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Camren Wynter added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Delaware was led by Allen, who scored 23 points. Nelson added 20 points and was 10-for-12 from the free throw line, while Dylan Painter had all 14 of his points in the first half. The Blue Hens finished the game shooting 53 percent overall and committed just seven turnovers.
Drexel will play a pair of road CAA contests this weekend. The Dragons face Northeastern on Saturday afternoon and then play a Monday afternoon game at Hofstra.
