Opening Tip
Drexel continues CAA play with a trip to Elon on Friday, January 28. Tipoff from the Schar Center in Elon, North Carolina is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
About Drexel
A 9-2 run to open the fourth quarter helped lead the Dragons team to a 70-62 win against its archrival, the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon as part of Homecoming weekend. The victory extends the Dragons winning streak to 11 games.
The first quarter against Delaware saw a rarity in college basketball as the Dragons recorded an assist on all 10 of its made field goals. It is only the second time this season a team posted an assist for each made basket in a quarter when it made 10 or more buckets. Oklahoma went 10-for-18 in the second quarter with an assist on each make against Wichita State on December 29.
Keishana Washington and Hannah Nihill each scored in double figures in the same game for the 11th time this season against Delaware. In those games the Dragons are 9-2. Throughout their careers, the pair has both scored 10 or more in the same game 28 times with Drexel holding a 21-7 record in those contests.
Drexel has seen a marked improvement since the turn of the new year in its free throw shooting, connecting at a 80.0 percent clip during the last six contests, an eight percent increase over the first 10 games of the year. Specifically, during the recent four-game homestand, DU went 50-for-58 at the stripe, an 86.2 percent mark.
Scouting Elon
Elon enters play 10-5 overall and is 2-3 in conference following a 62-58 victory against Hofstra on Sunday. Due to postponements, Friday will be just the second home CAA game for the Phoenix.
Leading the offense for Elon is Brie Perpignan, who was recognized as preseason Honorable Mention All-CAA. She averages 15.0 points per game and is third in the conference at 5.7 assists per outing. The primary beneficiaries of her passing ability are Evonna McGill and Ariana Nance who tally 10.8 and 10.6 points a night respectively. Kayla Liles tops the team in rebounding at 6.1 a game.
Elon comes in as a good defensive team, ranking third in the conference, allowing 60.7 points per contest. The Phoenix also forces turnovers as their opponents give the ball up 18.9 times an outing. One area where it struggles is limiting second chances. Teams pull down 13 offensive rebounds a night against Elon.
Charlotte Smith is in her 11th season as the head coach of the Phoenix with a record of 179-135. Her best seasons on the bench came in 2016-17 and 2017-18 when Elon combined to go 52-15 and won back-to-back CAA tournament championships. As a player she was the 1992 ACC Rookie of the Year and hit the game-winning shot for North Carolina in the 1994 national championship game.
All-Time Series
Friday is the 17th meeting between the Dragons and Phoenix with Drexel holding an 11-5 series lead. The teams split last season's regular season series with the Dragons taking the most important contest of the year, a 65-59 win in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. Nihill led DU with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting while pulling in five board and dishing five assists.
