Maxfield Leads Dragons to Fourth Place Finish in Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. - The Drexel golf team shot under par for the third straight round on its way to a fourth place finish at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in Sonoma. The Dragons shot 287 on Tuesday and finished just one shot out of third place in the nine-team field at the Sonoma Golf Club. Oscar Maxfield was Drexel's top finisher in the tournament at 209 (-7), which put him in a tie for fourth place overall.
Liam Hart had his best round of the young season on Tuesday. He fired a team-best three-under 69 to lead the Dragons. Maxfield had a 70 on his way to a top-five finish. The graduate student shot 70 or less in each of his three rounds. Drue Nicholas carded a 73 and tied with Griffin Mitchell for 20th place overall at two-over par.
The hosts from the University of California picked up the win by shooting 843, 21 shots below par. The Bears were 13 shots better than Minnesota. San Jose State (858) was in third place, just one stroke better than the Dragons. Harvard and Long Beach State tied for fifth. Santa Clara, Dartmouth and UC Santa Barbara closed out the field.
Drexel returns home and will be off for just over a week. The Dragons will play in the OBX Intercollegiate beginning on Oct. 23. in Powells Point, N.C.
