PHILADELPHIA – Luke House made his first start a memorable one as the Norristown native poured in a career-high 25 points as Drexel defeated Delaware State, 85-52, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons set the school record by draining 17 3-pointers in the game as they improved to 6-6.
Drexel used a number of runs in the first half to take a commanding lead and never look back. The Dragons made four 3-pointers in the first four minutes to jump out to a 14-4 lead. Later in the half, Drexel rattled off 15 straight points and closed the first half on a 30-2 run to take a 48-16 lead to the locker room. Drexel's defense forced 17 turnovers in the first half and held the Hornets without a field goal for the last 9:55 of the half.
House, whose previous career-high was nine points, shattered that mark just 11 minutes into the game. He finished the day 10-for-15 from the field, 5-for-10 from deep, grabbed five boards and added three assists in the game. Coletrane Washington scored 12 points and was the only other Dragon in double figures. Amari Williams, Mate Okros and Yame Butler each scored nine points. Williams snared a game-high 12 rebounds and handed out a career-high six assists.
The 17 3-pointers broke the previous record of 16 set back in 2002 against George Mason. Seven different Dragons had at least one trey in the game. Mate Okros came off the bench to sink three treys, while Jamie Bergens, Butler, Kobe MaGee and Washington each had a pair. Drexel shot 49 percent from the floor and finished 17-for-36 (.472) from behind the arc. The Dragons had 25 assists on 31 field goals.
Brandon Stone led the Hornets with 11 points. The Hornets shot just 32 percent in the game and made just three 3-pointers as they lost for the ninth straight time.
The Dragons play their final non-conference game of the season on Dec. 22 at Fairfield. Colonial Athletic Association play begins on Dec. 29 when Elon comes to the DAC.
