ELON, N.C. - Drexel scored the first four points of the game, never trailed in the game and concluded its three-game road trip with a 71-60 win at Elon. For the second straight game, five players scored in double figures as Drexel improved to 9-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 14-12 overall.
The Dragons led by as many as 22 points in the game and won despite making just one of their final 11 field goal attempts. Elon (8-21, 5-11 CAA) continually sent Drexel to the line and the Dragons made just enough of their attempts from the charity stipe to win for the second straight time and for the third time in their last four games. It was the last road game of the season for the Dragons, who finished 5-4 in league play away from the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Drexel opened the second half on and 8-0 run and Elon never got back in the game. The lead stayed at least 11 points the entire second half. Melik Martin, Coletrane Washington and Xavier Bell each scored 12 points for Drexel. Amari Williams and Camren Wynter added 10 apiece. Wynter returned to the starting line-up after missing the end of the William & Mary game with an injury.
Elon stayed in the game during the first half mainly due to its offensive rebounding. The Phoenix grabbed eight offensive boards that led to eight second chance points. Elon needed that as it struggled from long range, missing all five of its long-range attempts. Drexel got a big lift right before intermission. Elon had a shot clock violation with just four seconds to play. Zach Spiker called time and set up a play that worked to perfection. Drexel got the ball in to Tre Brown, who found a wide-open Coletrane Washington for a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Drexel a 32-21 lead.
Elon was led by Darius Burford, who scored 31 points on 12-for-23 shooting. The Dragons held Elon to just 4-for-22 from behind the arc (.182) and just 32 percent overall. The Phoenix had 18 offensive rebounds in the game, but only scored 16 points off those boards.
The Dragons return home in the morning and will close the regular season with a pair of home games. Drexel hosts UNCW on Thursday night and the College of Charleston will visit the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Senior Day next Saturday.
