Golf Opens Dorado Beach Collegiate With First Round of Five Under Par

DORADO, Puerto Rico - The Drexel golf team found Puerto Rico to its liking on Sunday. The Dragons opened the Dorado Beach Collegiate with a five-under par 283, which was good enough for fifth place in the 13-team field after the first day of competition.
Drue Nicholas and Angelo Giantsopoulos provided a potent one-two punch for the Dragons in the opening round. Nicholas tied for second place overall with a six-under-par 66. He played the final 10 holes at four-under par and had eight birdies on the day. Giantsopoulos was just one shot behind Nicholas and was tied for fourth overall at 67. He also had eight birdies and had four straight birdies on holes 11 through 15.
Jeffrey Cunningham and Griffin Mitchell both shot 75 at the Dorado Beach Resort and Club's Sugarcane Course, which was playing at 7,112 yards.
On the day 22 different players broke par on day one. Ball State was the overall leader at 14-under par. UNCG was one stroke back, while Wofford finished at 12-under par. Rutgers was fourth after 18 holes, just one shot better than Drexel. The Dragons were the top CAA school after the first round. JMU was at three-under par, while Elon shot even par.
The second round will begin on Monday morning in Dorado. The forecast calls for temperatures in the low 80s on Monday.
