About Drexel
Keishana Washington scored a career-high 40 points as the Dragons survived double overtime to claim their 13th consecutive win, a 75-67 victory at William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. Already having a strong game with 22 points in regulation and five more in the first overtime, Washington took over in the second OT period. She scored the first 10 points of the second extra session for DU and eventually recorded 13 of the Dragons 17 points in the stanza.
Washinton's effort was the second 40+ point game in the CAA this season and is the seventh highest total this season nationally. It is also the first 40-point game for a Dragon since 2010, just the fourth in the Division I era of the program, and the first for a player not named Gabriela Marginean who accomplished the feat three times including a team record, 47-point explosion against Northeastern on February 22, 2009.
Washington and Hannah Nihill each scored in double figures in the same game for the 13th time this season against William & Mary. In those games the Dragons are 11-2. Throughout their careers, the pair has both scored 10 or more in the same game 30 times with Drexel holding a 23-7 record in those contests.
Drexel is 6-0 in true road games this season, one of only four teams in Division I to be undefeated on the road, joining Columbia (8-0), South Dakota (8-0), and Florida Gulf Coast (5-0). Time of day doesn't matter for the Dragons either, with DU posting identical 8-1 records in day games (before 5:00 p.m. local time) and night games.
With an 18-for-23 performance at the line at William & Mary, Drexel continued its improvement in free throws since the turn of the new year. In eight conference games, DU is connecting at a 79.4 percent clip (100-for-126), an seven percent increase over the first 10 games of the year. At home in CAA competition, the Dragons are 50-for-58 at the stripe, an 86.2 percent mark. The number of attempts is also increasing with Drexel taking 15.8 free throws per game in conference play compared to 10.5 in non-conference action.
Scouting UNCW
UNCW enters play 3-14 overall with an 0-7 record in the CAA and is coming off a 56-40 loss at Hofstra on Tuesday. The Seahawks have not won in 2022 since going 2-2 in December.
Leading the offense for UNCW is Philadelphia native and Imhotep Charter alumna Sierra DaCosta at 13.3 points per game. Just shy of double figures is Carrie Gross with 9.9 an outing with Micah Hoggatt netting 9.3 a contest. Hoggatt leads the Seahawks at 6.1 board a game. Allie Best tops the team with 34 assists this season.
A couple of areas that have been a strength for UNCW are shooting from distance and making free throws. The Seahawks are third in the conference at 31.7 percent from beyond the arc and are second in the CAA in free throw percentage (75.1).
Consistency has been difficult to come by at times as only DaCosta has started all 17 games while Hoggatt and Cross are the only others to have appeared in each contest. Nine different players have started for the Seahawks and 10 average 11 minutes or more a game. Rebounding has also been a rough area, ranking last in the conference in both rebounds per game at 31.4 and rebounding margin at -7.8.
Veteran coach Karen Barefoot is in her fifth season at the helm of UNCW with a record of 50-79 with the Seahawks. Now in her 24th year as a collegiate head coach, she has a career mark of 363-315 with previous stops at Apprentice (1995-2001), Lenoir-Rhyne (2001-05), Elon (2008-11), and Old Dominion (2011-17), guiding her teams to four 20-win seasons.
All-Time Series
Sunday is the 39th all-time meeting between Drexel and UNCW with the Dragons holding a 30-8 advantage, including 21 wins in a row. Most recently, Drexel survived a 71-68 overtime battle on January 9. Friday will be the first game between the two schools in Philadelphia since March 5, 2020.
