Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team continues its postseason run, hosting the Bucknell Bison in the Second Round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Monday, March 21. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
About Drexel
Maura Hendrixson stepped up on both ends of the floor as the Dragons advanced to the Second Round of the WNIT with a 54-47 win against Norfolk State on Thursday night. Hendrixson propelled the Dragons on the defensive end with a career-high 13 rebounds, 10 of them off Spartans' misses. Offensively, she posted eight assists and scored six. Keishana Washington topped the scoring list with 16. Tessa Brugler scored 13 and pulled in seven rebounds.
Brugler will face her former team for the first and only time in her career on Monday. The graduate student from Nazareth, Pa. played for the Bison from 2018-21 and was a three-time All-Patriot League honoree (2020-21 First Team, All-Defensive Team, 2019-20 Third Team).
With the results of postseason action around the league, when it takes the court on Monday night, Drexel will be the only Colonial Athletic Association school still playing in 2021-22. Delaware and Towson fell in their respective opening contests of the NCAA tournament and WNIT and Northeast completes its run in the WBI on Sunday.
Throughout their history, the Dragons haven't been known as a team that blocks a lot of shots, but this year has been an exception to that rule. Drexel has rejected 95 opponent attempts this season, the most since 97 blocks by the 2009 team. Brugler leads the way with 46 and set the tone early, tying a school single-game record with six blocks against La Salle on November 17. DU last blocked 100 shots in a year in 2007-08 and the program record is 116 in 1982-83.
Scouting Bucknell
Bucknell enters play 24-9 overall and is coming off a 73-64 win against Fordham in the WNIT First Round on Friday. The Bison went 12-6 in th Patriot League this season, tying for third in the conference, and reached the PL championship game before falling to American.
Leading the offense for Bucknell is Taylor O'Brien, a First Team All-Patriot performer who averages 16.8 points per game. Joining O'Brien in double figures is Cecelia Collins at 10.7 a night. Just below the threshhold is Carly Krsul who nets 9.8 a contest off the bench. O'Brien also leads the Bison in rebounding at 6.6 an outing. Marly Walls has 110 assists on the season.
Bucknell is a standout defensive team, allowing opponents just 54.8 points per game, ranking 15th nationally in that category. They also take care of the ball, committing just 12.3 turnovers a night. The Bison shoot well from distance, connecting on nearly 34 percent of their three-pointers as a team.
It can be tough to find a weakness for Bucknell, but if there is one, it might be rebounding as the Bison was seventh in the Patriot League, pulling in 34.9 boards a night an having a negative rebounding margin.
Trevor Woodruff is in his third year at Bucknell with a record of 57-16 in Lewisburg. He is no stranger to the sidelines, spending 11 seasons as the men's basketball coach at his alma mater of Misericordia before taking over Division III national power Scranton and guiding the Royals to a 30-1 record and the Elite Eight in 2016.
All-Time Series
Monday is the 28th all-time meeting between Drexel and Bucknell with the Dragons holding a 17-10 series lead. The Bison won the last game between the schools, a 60-49 decision in Lewisburg on December 18, 2019. DU is 11-0 all-time against Bucknell at The DAC.
