BROOKLINE, Mass.– The Drexel men's soccer team played the Northeastern Huskies to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night in Brookline. The Dragons struck in the 76th minute with a penalty kick, and Northeastern evened the score at one with a set-piece goal in the 88th minute.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Drexel was consistent on the offensive end. The Dragons took six shots and placed five of those on target.
- The Dragon midfield and defense appeared to be in midseason form, allowing just three shots on goal.
- Drexel is now tied with Northeastern in the conference standings with four points. Both teams have a win and a tie in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams entered halftime with two shots apiece, the Huskies were the team to have a shot at scoring first. In the 73rd minute, Northeastern earned a chance at the penalty strike. Alessandro Capogna had his moment to shine with the match potentially on the line. The junior dove to the left and redirected the ball into the post and back into play. The Huskies had another chance on goal, and Copagna made another excellent stop to keep Northeastern from scoring.
- On the other end of the field, Drexel drew a foul inside the 18-yard box in the 76th minute to earn a penalty kick of its own. Antonio Illuminato took advantage of the free shot and beat the keeper to the left to give Drexel a 1-0 lead.
- Northeastern pressed hard for the rest of the match, keeping the ball on Drexel's end. In the 88th minute, the Huskies scored one a set-piece from about 25-yards out.
Drexel returns to Philadelphia and hosts Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, September 13. The match against the Philadelphia Soccer 6 team is slated to kickoff at 6 p.m. from Vidas Athletic Complex.
