RICHMOND, Va. - The Drexel golf team tied for sixth place overall at the VCU Shootout. The Dragons shot six-under par in the final round of their first event of the fall to finish at 23-under par (841) at the CCV Tuckahoe Creek Course. The 23-under par was the second lowest score by a Drexel team in a 54-hole event in school history.
The Dragons got contributions from their entire team in the two-day event. On Tuesday, all five players shot par or better. Drue Nicholas led the way with a three-under 69 on the 6,927-yard course. The junior from Egg Harbor Township, N.J., finished the tournament at 10-under par (70-67-69---206) and was tied for 10th place overall. Oscar Maxfield, Griffin Mitchell and Caleb Taylor each carded a one-under 71 on Tuesday, while Brockton English shot 72. Maxfield, a graduate student playing in his Drexel debut after transferring from Utah, was consistent throughout and finished at 210. Both Nicholas and Maxfield shot below par in each round. English was two shots behind Maxfield. He was at par or better in each of his rounds.
VCU and Charleston Southern tied for the top spot at 828 (-36). They were one shot ahead of George Washington. Rhode Island was at 27-under par, while Richmond was at 24-under, one shot better than Drexel and Old Dominion. The Dragons were the top finisher of four Colonial Athletic Association teams in the field. Drexel finished two shots ahead of William & Mary and seven shots better than Elon. CAA newcomer North Carolina A&T was also in the field.
The Dragons came within two shots of tying the school record of 25-under par, which was set at the Dorado Beach Collegiate last spring. Head Coach Ben Feld and his squad will compete in the River Run Collegiate beginning Monday in Davidson, N.C.
