Dragons Visit Winthrop Saturday Evening

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday evening in South Carolina. The Dragons will visit Winthrop University at 5:30. It is homecoming in Rock Hill and a big crowd is expected as the Dragons look to get in the win column for the first time this season. The game can be seen on ESPN+ and will also be available on drexeldragons.com as Rob Brooks will once again be on the call for the Dragons. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
About the Dragons
Drexel dropped its opener, 67-61, at La Salle on Tuesday night. It was the school's first game as a member of the Philadelphia Big 5. The game was tight throughout and featured an astonishing 28 lead changes and 11 ties. La Salle pulled away down the stretch outscoring Drexel, 8-1, in the final 2:20. Amari Williams led the team with 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Justin Moore added 15 points and a game-high five assists.
Drexel was picked to finish third in the CAA this season. The Dragons return four of five starters from a team that won 17 games a year ago. Williams is the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. The big man from England has won the CAA Defensive Player each of the last two seasons. Tri-captains Luke House, Lamar Oden, Jr. and Mate Okros are also back. All three players were members of Drexel's 2021 CAA Championship team. Justin Moore is Drexel's point guard. Moore was an All-CAA Rookie team pick last year and is poised to have an even bigger year in 2023-24. Overall, Drexel will have 10 returning scholarship players from a year ago.
About Winthrop
The Eagles (1-1) are a member of the Big South. They were picked to finish third in the Big South and received a first-place vote. Winthrop has three players on the All-Big South Preseason Team. Kelton Talford, a senior forward, was a first team pick, while fellow seniors Kasen Harrison and Sin'Cere McMahon were named to the second team. Winthrop defeated Brevard on Wednesday after losing to Clemson to start the year.
The Series
The teams have only met one other time. That came back in 2011 at the Paradise Jam. Drexel was victorious, 68-45. Frantz Massenat, who is now an assistant coach, scored 23 points to lead Drexel.
What's Next
The Dragons return home for the DAC opener on Tuesday (Nov. 14) against Temple. It will be the first home Big 5 game for Drexel and the first time the Owls have come to the DAC since 1985.
