NORFOLK, Va. - Drexel renews its rivalry with Old Dominion on Sunday in Norfolk. The Dragons and Monarchs spent more than a decade as conference foes in the CAA before ODU left to join Conference USA. Sunday's game can be seen on ESPN+ and will also be available on drexeldragons.com with Rob Brooks providing the audio call. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
About the Dragons
Drexel begins play Sunday with a 3-2 record after winning a pair of games at the Market Street Challenge last weekend in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Garfield Turner had the best two-game stretch of his career as he averaged 11 points in Drexel's two wins. Turner is shooting .875 (14-for-16) from the floor this season.
Amari Williams, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, leads the team with 12.4 points and 9.4 rebounds. The senior is the reigning two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year. He has two double-doubles this season. Sophomore Justin Moore is scoring 12 points per game and has 18 assists. Yame Butler, has moved into the starting line-up and averages 9.0 points. Luke House already has one 20-point performance this season and is shooting a team-high 44 percent from long range.
About Old Dominion
The Monarchs (1-3) have lost three straight after a difficult early season schedule. After a win against Virginia Wesleyan, ODU lost games at Ball State, at No. 14 Arkansas and then a 76-56 home loss to Princeton, a team that went to the Sweet 16 a year ago.
Chaunce Jenkins leads ODU with 17.3 points per game and is shooting 50 percent from behind the arc. Tyrone Williams is also in double figures with 11.3 points per contest. The Monarchs, just like they were during their CAA days, are a very good rebounding team. They have outrebounded their opponents by four per game. As a team, ODU shoots 44 percent from the floor and 41 percent from 3-point territory.
The Series
Old Dominion leads the all-time series, 12-10. The teams were both members of the CAA until ODU left to join Conference USA in 2012. Drexel has won two in a row, including a 71-59 win last year, and five of the last six. The last meeting in Norfolk came in 2013, when Drexel prevailed 81-77. Damion Lee was 7-for-8 from deep and scored a career-high 34 points in the win for the Dragons.
What's Next
The Dragons will be back on the road early next week. They will visit Lafayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Drexel will play in the Big Five Classic at the Wells Fargo Center. It will be the Dragons first game in the building and they will face either Saint Joseph's, Penn or Villanova. That will be determined after the city games on the 29th..
