NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion scored the first five points in overtime and didn't trail in the extra frame as the Dragons fell to the Monarchs, 68-61, at Chartway Arena. The Dragons forced overtime by coming up with a big defensive stand, but went scoreless for almost three minutes to start overtime, and saw their two-game win streak snapped.
Drexel led by as many as five points in the second half, but the offense went cold for a long stretch as ODU regained the lead. The Dragons went more than seven minutes without a field goal, but still trailed by only four as they played well on the defensive end and made free throws. Amari Williams scored on a put back to cut the lead to two with just three minutes to play. After and ODU bucket, Williams sank a pair of free throws trimming the Monarchs' lead to 54-52 with 57 seconds remaining. The Dragons came up with a stop and tied the game when Lamar Oden, Jr. made two free throws with 15 seconds left, ODU tried for the win in regulation but Oden went up strong to contest a shot and then came up with the rebound, forcing the extra period.
The overtime period was all ODU. Tyrone Williams scored the first three points of overtime and Chaunce Jenkins added a lay-up to give the Monarchs the lead for good. Luke House broke the drought with a 3-pointer and Drexel was able to cut it to two points twice, but ODU held off the Dragons.
Williams led Drexel with 19 points and had a season-best six blocked shots. Oden, Jr. added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Dragons had their opportunities to win but really struggled to take care of the ball. Drexel committed 18 turnovers in the game that led to 20 ODU points. Drexel once again had difficulties shooting from long range. The Dragons made just three of their 21 long-range attempts.
Tyrone Williams led ODU (2-3) with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Chaunce Jenkins added 18 and was 7-for-8 from the line. Drexel's defense held the Monarchs to just 54 points in regulation and 39 percent from the floor in the game. ODU came in shooting better than 40 percent from deep but were held to just 3-for-14 behind the arc.
Drexel will be back in action on Wednesday night when the Dragons visit Lafayette. On Saturday the Dragons will play in the Big 5 Classic against a team to be determined.
