Last-Second Free Throw Lifts Lehigh Past Drexel, 58-57

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh Mountain Hawks sank a free throw with a second left on the clock to defeat the Drexel Dragons on Tuesday night in Bethlehem, 58-57. The Dragons fell to a 2-3 record, while Lehigh improved to 6-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
Brooke Mullin tied a career-high 17 points on 6-of-18 from the field and 3-for-3 from long range. It was the second straight game with 17 points for Mullin and the first time in the graduate student's career that she has scored double digits in back-to-back games.
Laine McGurk tallied 14 points in the effort, marking her fourth straight game in double-digits. The freshman also hit a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining to tie the game at 57-57.
Drexel forced 18 turnovers and notched eight steals in the effort. The 18 turnovers are the second-highest for Lehigh this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lehigh started the game shooting the ball well. The Mountain Hawks went 8-for-12 from the field to jump out to an 18-10 lead after 10 minutes of play. Mullin helped the Dragons on the offensive front by sinking two treys.
The Dragons took control in the second quarter. While holding Lehigh to just eight points in the quarter, Drexel poured 24 on to head into the break, leading 34-26. Mullin broke into double-digits after driving to the basket with just over eight minutes remaining. The graduate student ended the quarter with 13 points overall. Most importantly, Drexel ended the first half on a 17-2 run, causing five turnovers and stealing the ball three times.
The third quarter favored the Mountain Hawks, who outscored the Dragons 14-10. Drexel continued to pressure the Lehigh offense, causing five more turnovers. At the end of the third quarter, Drexel led 44-40.
The final quarter was a back-and-forth battle. After Lehigh took the lead with just under six minutes left in the quarter. But, Drexel managed to pull within a basket with 20 seconds remaining. The home team went 0-for-2 at the free throw line but grabbed an offensive rebound to go to the line once more and put the game away. Meghan O'Brien converted on one of the free throws to push the Lehigh lead to three, giving Drexel a chance to tie the game, 57-54. After a Drexel timeout, McGurk hit an off-balanced three-pointer to even the score. With 1.3 seconds remaining, Lily Fandre drew a foul and went to the charity stripe to take two free throws. Fandre missed the first shot but succeeded on her second attempt. With no timeouts left, Drexel was forced to take the ball out from the baseline and was unable to get a shot off before the horn sounded.

The Dragons travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to face the Marist Red Foxes on December 6. Tip from McCann Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
