WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drexel women's tennis team became the first ever seventh-seeded team in CAA history to advance to the conference semifinals after defeating the second-seeded Delaware Blue Hens on Friday afternoon, 4-2.
Since joining the CAA in 2001, Drexel had never been to the semifinals of the women's tennis tournament. It is also the largest upset in CAA Women's Tennis Championship history in terms of seeding.
Delaware jumped out to an early start with a pair of wins in doubles play. The Dragons' top-seeded players, Lorie Lemongo and Renata Lombera were tied 4-4 when their match was cut short.
In singles play, Drexel made it competitive with three quick victories. In the No. 2 match, Lombera won 6-4, 6-2 and Isabel Cabrerizo downed her opponent in No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The third win came in the No. 6 match as Aida Garcia Mendez downed her Delaware opponent, 6-2, 6-3.
Delaware took the No. 4 match, shortening the Drexel lead to 3-2. The match came down to the top flight and the No. 5 match. Cristina Corte Gonzalez and her opponent were in a tiebreaker of the second set when it was finished early. In Lemongo's No. 1 match, it was a back-and-forth affair, which saw Delaware's Adel Abidullina take the first set, 6-1. After that, however, Lemongo took over. The sophomore won the second set, 6-3, and then clinched the match for Drexel with a 6-4 victory.
The Dragons return for day three of the CAA tournament on Saturday to face the winner of the match between the third-seeded Charleston and the sixth-seeded UNCW. Because of impending weather in Williamsburg, the timing of the semifinal matches have been adjusted. Drexel's match will begin at noon on Saturday.
