WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drexel women's tennis team had its historic run at the CAA Championships come to an end on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons were defeated by the UNCW Seahawks, 4-0, in the conference semifinals.
To get to the semifinals, Drexel needed to do what no other team in CAA history has done. The Dragons beat the second-seeded Delaware Blue Hens in the quarterfinals which was the biggest upset in terms of seeding. It was also the first ever appearance for Drexel in the semifinals.
UNCW took the doubles point after winning the No. 2 and No. 3 match. Lorie Lemongo and Renata Lombera had the edge in the top match but it was cut short. Lemongo and Lombera led, 5-3.
In singles play, Isabel Cabrerizo's third-seeded match was cut short in the third set. In the No. 6 match, Aida Garcia Mendez had a lead in the third set before her match was cut short as well. Lemongo's first-seeded match was tied 3-3 in the second set when the match was called.
The Dragons end the season with 11-12 record and a 3-1 mark in conference play. It was also the last match for graduating players Mya Fuentes, Cristina Corte Gonzalez, Aida Garcia Mendez and Katerina Cummings.
