Val Van Hellemont Lifts Drexel to a 3-0 Win over App State

BOONE, N.C .– Val Van Hellemont scored a pair of goals in the second half to lift the Drexel field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Appalachian State on Friday night. The Dragons extends their advantage in the series by three games to none and improves to 2-1 on the season.

Dragons continue their road trip as they host Queens University in a neutral site contest in Boone on Sunday, September 3. The matchup against the Royals is scheduled for Noon.

- DU's defense held the Mountaineers to six shots and two corners in its first shutout of the season.
- Megan Hadfield obtained four saves.
- Pien Elsen and Van Hellemont each have scored at least two goals in the first three games to open their collegiate careers.
- Van Hellemont collected her second multi-point performance of the season following a two-point outing against La Salle.
- The first half ended scoreless after Drexel and App State were unsuccessful on corner attempts.
- At the start of the second half, DU earned its second corner opportunity and with help from Tina Rawa and Natali Foster, Pien Elsen fired a shot from the top of the circle for the first goal of the game.
- With under thirty seconds to go before the fourth quarter, Grace O'Connor sent a pass to Van Hellemont in front of the cage who buried it for her second tally of the season.
- Seniors Liz Chipman and Stephanie Oleykowski assisted Van Hellemont's second goal of the contest which extended Drexel's lead to 3-0 with ten minutes left in regulation.
- In net, Hadfield stopped a pair of shots in the final period to close out the game.
