BROOKLINE, Mass. – Ava Boyd scored off a set piece in the 79th minute as the Drexel women's soccer team got its first CAA result of the season with a 2-2 draw at Northeastern on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 2-1, DU nearly scored on a throw in a couple seconds earlier, but the ball was knocked away from the net and over the goal line by a Huskies defender. On the ensuing corner, the ball was headed around before Boyd came clear with it and pushed it past the NU keeper for the equalizing goal.
After an opening 20 minute stretch that saw the teams combine for just two total shots, Meg Tate got the scoring started in the 21st minute. Off a corner, Lily Dunbar sent a ball in that was delivered by Tate into the top left of the goal for a 1-0 Dragons lead.
From there, both teams started to find their offensive rhythm through the remainder of the half as the shots in the final 25 minutes saw Drexel hold a 6-4 edge. Defensively, Joella Chase made three stops in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, the Huskies tied the contest at 1-1 on a penalty kick before weather forced more than an hour of delays. Upon resumption, Northeastern scored in the 74th minute, setting up Boyd's heroics.
The Dragons return to action on Thursday when they travel to Hofstra. Match time from Hempstead, N.Y. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
