LOWELL, Mass. – The Drexel men's soccer team slighted the UMass Lowell River Hawks in a non-conference matchup in Lowell, 3-2. The Dragons scored a pair of goals in the first half and tacked on the game-winning goal in the 78th minute of the match to improve to 3-1-1 overall.
Drexel scored its first goal in the 11th minute of the game. After pressuring non-stop, Isaiah Whittaker-Francis received a cross by Antonio Illuminato and powered a left-footed shot from outside the 18. The goal is the first of Whittaker-Francis' career.
The second goal was scored with 16 seconds left in the first half. Colin Davis cleared a ball up the field and Cesar Banacloy found a way to head it past the out-of-position keeper. With a wide-open net, Dominick Bachstein tapped the ball into the back of the net to double Drexel's lead.
In the 78th minute, a ball that was serviced into the box from Antonio Illuminato was headed into the River Hawks box when it found the head of Julian Jordheim, who checked into the contest for the first time in the match just a minute prior. The freshman headed the ball into the goal and notched the third goal of the season. Jordheim, a staple in Drexel's backline, also leads the team in goals.
UMass Lowell scored a pair of goals in the match. The River Hawks scored both of their goals in the second half. The first came in the 75th minute, while the second was scored in the 80th minute.
Alessandro Capogna and Raphael Bartell split time in net for Drexel. Capogna, who started the game, only faced two shots, neither on target. Bartell faced five shots and made one save in his 45 minute workload.
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, September 16. The Dragons travel to West Long Beach, N.J., and face the Monmouth Hawks in a conference matchup starting at 7 p.m.
