PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The Drexel golf team opened the fall season with an impressive victory at the Temple Invitational. The Dragons had contributions from up and down the lineup as they picked up the win at The 1912 Club. Oscar Maxfield led four Dragons who finished in the top 10 overall with a second-place individual finish. The Dragons pulled away down the stretch and finished the 36-hole tournament with a six-over-par 283, six strokes better than Rider, their closest competitor.
Drexel entered Sunday's play with a three-stroke lead. Temple and Rider got off to strong starts early in the round as they tried to overtake Drexel, but the Dragons answered with an impressive back nine. Over the final seven holes of the tournament, the four Drexel scorers combined for eight birdies as the Dragons extended their lead and earned the win against a field which included three other Philadelphia schools (Penn, Temple and Saint Joseph's). Drue Nicholas had three of those eight birdies as he played the final nine at two-under par.
Individually, Maxfield finished second overall at one-under 139. He was just one shot behind David Hurly of Lehigh. Maxfield carded a two-over-par 72 on Sunday after a 67 on Saturday. Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa was the team's top performer in the final round. The senior fired a three-under 69 and closed his round with a birdie on 18. Nicholas had an even-par 70 on Sunday. Both Nyamukondiwa and Nicholas tied for fourth overall. Griffin Mitchell had a 72 on Sunday, while Caleb Taylor finished tied for eighth overall with a two-day total of 144.
The Dragons will be back in action next week when they play in the J.T. Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina. The tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday at the Sapphire Country Club in Sapphire, N.C.
