Final Results
SAPPHIRE, N.C. - The Drexel golf team made it two-straight victories to start the season as the Dragons were victorious at the J.T. Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina. Drexel finished the tournament at 13-under par, six shots better than its closest competitor. It is the first time in eight years that the Dragons picked up back-to-back wins to start the season.
Drexel held the lead by three strokes heading into the final round at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. It never relinquished it as three of the Dragons four scorers shot par or better on Tuesday. Caleb Taylor was outstanding throughout the tournament. The sophomore from Woodbine, Md., fired a two-under 69 in the final round, which included an eagle on the par four, 287-yard 12th hole. He was under par in each of the three rounds and led the way for the Drexel at 208 (-5). Taylor tied for sixth overall. Liam Hart had his best round of the tournament with a one-under-par 70. Drue Nicholas was once again a factor as he carded even par on Tuesday. Nicholas finished at 210 (-3), which tied him for 16th overall. Griffin Mitchell had a 72 on the day and was one-over par (214) overall, tying him with teammate Oscar Maxfield.
As a team the Dragons shot two-under-par 282 in the final round and 839 overall in the two-day, 54-hole event. Drexel's closest competition came from CAA-foe Elon, who finished at 845. Georgia Southern and Radford tied for third, one shot behind Elon. Remi Chartier of East Tennessee State, who was playing unattached, was the medalist at 199 (-14).
The last time the Dragons won two in a row to start the fall season came back in 2015. Drexel won the Keenan Invitational at Saint Bonaventure to start the season and followed that with a win at the Columbia/Tuxedo Invitational. Drexel goes for three-straight wins when it tees it up at the City 6 Championship on October 18 at Sunnybrook Golf Club.
