The Dragons won all four events they played in this fall season
POWELLS POINT, N.C. - The Drexel golf team completed a perfect fall by winning the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. The Dragons won all four events they played in this fall and won four straight tournaments for the first time in school history. Drexel is the only men's team in all of Division I to win all of the events it participated in during the fall season. Drexel's Drue Nicholas and Griffin Mitchell finished first and second overall. For Nicholas, it was his third career tournament victory and the second time in the past three years that he won the event.
DU began the day with an eight-stroke lead and pulled away by going five-under par on Tuesday afternoon in North Carolina. The Dragons were the only team below par on the day. Nicholas and Liam Hart led the way by shooting 69. Nicholas went three under on the back and was the only player to break 70 in each of the final two rounds. Hart had an outstanding day. The graduate student from Holland, Pa. had three birdies and just one bogey as he rebounded nicely after entering the day at 10-over par.
Mitchell was consistent all week for Ben Feld's squad. The senior ended the tournament with a one-under par 70. He shot par or better all three days on the 6,563-yard course to finish at 209 (-4). Mitchell had 12 birdies, just one less than Nicholas, as the Dragons took their first ever ODU/OBX Intercollegiate title.Oscar Maxfield also had a bounce-back day, shooting even par after shooting six-over par in each of his first two rounds.
One of the keys to the victory was the team's play on the par fives. Drexel was 24-under par on the courses four par fives. That was a whopping 17 strokes better than anyone else in the tournament. As a team the Dragons led the field with 52 birdies. The next closest team was SIU Edwardsville with 44.
"What a win this was for not only our guys, but for our alumni and supporters who do so much for our program," said Feld. "We knew exactly what was at stake this week and the team so focused on executing each task required to get the job done. I'm so proud of all 11 of our guys. To put together an undefeated fall is just unheard of and is such a testament to the focus and purpose the whole group came back with this fall. It takes total buy in from the whole roster, guy one through guy 11. These guys know how to close. It's tough to teach that, but these guys have that "it"."
The Dragons previously picked up victories this fall in the Temple Invitational, the J.T. Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina and the Big 5 Championship.
