Okros Scores 22 as Drexel Defeats Elon, 89-69
ELON, N.C. – Mate Okros scored a career-high 22 points as Drexel remained unbeaten in CAA play with an 89-69 victory at Elon on Saturday night. The Dragons are now 5-0 for the first time ever in CAA play. Drexel won its third straight game on the road and is now 12-6 overall.
The Dragons played one of their most complete halves of the season against the Phoenix in the opening 20 minutes. Elon came out on fire, making four 3-pointers in the first five minutes, but led by just three as the Dragons seemed to answer every bucket. The Phoenix cooled off and the Dragons began to open up a lead. Late in the first half, the Dragons made eight straight field goals, culminating with a Garfield Turner lay-in to give DU a commanding 17-point lead with 3:25 to play. Okros had four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the opening stanza. Amari Williams added 13 as the Dragons shot a blistering 62 percent in the half.
Drexel held the Phoenix at bay the entire second half as Elon was unable to get back in the game. The Dragons held at least an 18-point lead for the rest of the night. The Dragons had a balanced scoring effort with all five starters scoring at least 10 points. Okros was outstanding all night and finished the evening 6-for-8 from behind the arc. His sixth three of the night moved him into 11th place on Drexel's career list with 166. Williams had another solid performance, making six of his nine attempts, scoring 17 points and grabbing six boards in just 18 minutes. Luke House added 13 points, while Justin Moore added 11 with a game-high seven assists. Lucas Monroe chipped in with 10 points. Garfield Turner had another solid game off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds.
Drexel shot 59 percent for the game and sank 11 of its 23 3-point attempts. The Dragons also had their best night of the season from the free throw line, making 16 of their 18 attempts.
Elon was led by Rob Higgins, who scored 18 points. Higgins and LA Pratt each drained four 3-pointers. The Phoenix finished the game with 11 treys.
The last time the Dragons were unbeaten in their first five league games came back during the 1996-97 season. Drexel was a member of the America East Conference that season. The last time a Drexel team won more than five conference games in a row to start the season came during the 1995-96 campaign, when a Malik Rose led Dragons' team won eight straight North Atlantic Conference games to start the year.
The Dragons return home to face Monmouth on Thursday night. The game will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
