Women's Basketball Falls Short to Monmouth, 63-55

PHILADELPHIA– The Drexel women's basketball team was defeated by the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 63-55. The Dragons (9-8, 4-2 CAA) held a one point lead in the fourth quarter, but Monmouth (10-6, 3-2 CAA) outscored the Dragons 18-12 to secure the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker had a game and career-high 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting. The junior also grabbed four rebounds in the effort.
Chloe Hodges and Brooke Mullin each tallied nine points, while Laine McGurk posted eight points over 14 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel had its most efficient first frame of the season, scoring 24 points on 11-for-18 shooting. Of the 11 buckets, seven were off an assist. Hodges posted seven points, while Baker contributed six points. The Dragons held Monmouth to 16 points and forced four turnovers.
The Hawks evened the score at the end of the first half, scoring 15 points in the second frame. Drexel struggled to find the bottom of the basket, going 3-for-11 and committing six turnovers.
Monmouth extended its lead to as high as seven in the third quarter. But a 8-0 Drexel run with just over minutes left erased the Hawks lead. Baker and McGurk connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Dragons climb back into the competition. Monmouth closed the third quarter ahead by two, 45-43.
Monmouth shot 5-for-7 in the fourth frame to score 18 points and kept the Dragons to just 5-for-15. The Dragons could not stop the heated-up Monmouth offense, who went 4-for-5 to close out the game.
