PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's basketball team rounds out Women's Big 5 pod play on Saturday afternoon against the Temple Owls at 2 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. The Dragons are playing with a trip to the 2024 Toyota Women's Big 5 Championship game on the line.
Last Time Out
A combined 30 points from Amaris Baker and Deja Evans was not enough to lift the Drexel women's basketball team past the UC Irvine Anteaters on Wednesday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 57- 47.
Baker extended her double-digit scoring streak to 15 games with a 20-point performance, including a 7-for-8 line from the charity stripe. The senior has opened the season with three straight 20-point performances.
Evans scored ten and grabbed six boards, the most since joining Drexel. Her 26-minute game is also a season-high for her.
Molly Lavin scored seven points and tallied four rebounds. Both stats are a season-high for the junior.
While Drexel only had the lead for 1:28, Drexel was within striking distance for the duration of the game. UCI only managed to push its lead to double digits twice and both occurrences came in the fourth frame.
Scouting Report
The Temple Owls enter Saturday's Big 5 game with a 2-2 record, with wins against Delaware and VCU. The Owls fell to Richmond to begin the season and lost to Georgetown in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 65-51.
The Owls boast a tall lineup. The shortest player listed on the roster is Kaylah Turner at 5'6". The Owls receive a lot of their point production from Tiarra East, a 5'10" senior who averages 17 points per game. Anissa Rivera, the team's 6'1" forward, is averaging a double-double this season with 10.8 points per game and
10.5 rebounds per game.
The Dragons will be looking to grab rebounds where they can. This season, opponents are outrebounding the Owls by one. TU has found success, however, on the offensive glass, corralling 60 offensive boards.
Temple is coached by Diane Richardson. Richardson, who is in her third year with the North Philly team, has a 33-32 record with the Owls. Prior to taking the helm of the Owl program, Richardson coached for five seasons at Towson, leading the Tigers to a 24-8 season before leaving following the 2021-22 season.
All-Time Series
The Dragons and Owls meet for the fourth time on Saturday afternoon. The last time the two teams met was the first round of the WNIT in the 2015-16 season. The last time Drexel played at the Liacouras Center, Dawn Staley led the Owls to a 66-54 victory. That game was on November 19, 2005.
Last Time Against Temple
The Drexel women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Friday night as the Dragons fell to Temple in the first round of the Women's National
Invitation Tournament, 74-66. Drexel hit a wall late in the game as the Dragons could not keep up with the fast-paced Owls in the game's final minutes.
Sarah Curran finished her junior season with one of her best performances of the year, scoring 24 points while going 10-for-20 from the floor and 4-for-5 from long range. Jessica Pellechio, also a junior, netted 11 points for the Dragons (19-14), and junior
Alexis Smith added 10 points and a team-high five rebounds. Redshirt-junior Meghan Creighton dished out seven assists and came up with a pair of steals to go along with her two points. Sara Woods, a sophomore, added six points and four rebounds off the bench in an impressive performance.
Looking Ahead
The Dragons close November with a trip to West Pennsylvania. The Dragons travel to State College to face the Pennsylvania State Nittany Lions. It is the eighth time the two teams play eachother. The Dragons won the last meeting in the DAC on December 18, 2022, 86-82, in overtime. The last time the two teams met in Happy Valley, Penn State was victorious, 84-70.
