Dragons Defeated in Overtime by Penn State, 86-78

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Drexel women's basketball team forced overtime against Penn State after trailing as much as 14 points but was unable to defeat the Nittany Lions at the Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday afternoon, 86-78.
BY THE NUMBERS
Chloe Hodges scored a season-high 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, tallied five assists and finished with five steals. Hodges set a new career-high, knocking down four three-pointers.
Amaris Baker also cashed in with 20 points and tallied four rebounds and three assists. Baker's 20-point performance is her fourth of the season.
Grace O'Neill turned in a season-high 17 points, marking the first time the junior scored north of ten this season. O'Neill was the most efficient player for the Dragons connecting on 7-of-11 shots and also going 3-for-4 from long range, tying a career-high in threes.
The Dragons did not take the lead until there were five minutes left in regulation. The Big Ten powerhouse struggled to overcome the Drexel defense, turning the ball over 22 times.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State jumped out to an early lead after shooting 13-for-20 in the first ten minutes of the game. Despite allowing 30 points, Drexel scored 21 points. All five starters for Drexel scored points in the first frame. Amaris Baker led the Dragons with six points.
The Dragons erupted for 24 points in the second quarter, trimming the PSU lead to four. Led by Chloe Hodges, who scored 13 points in the second frame, Drexel shot 10-for-21 from the field and 4-for-10 from long range. On the defensive end, Drexel held the Nittany Lions to 8-for-15 from the floor and 0-for-2 from deep. In the first half, Penn State, which averages 39.3 percent from behind the 3-point line was shooting 1-for-5.
Penn State shot 8-for-12 in the third frame. The Dragons shined defensively, causing seven turnovers. The Dragons scored 16 points. Cara McCormack pitched in seven points.
Drexel took the lead for the first time with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter on an Amaris Baker three-pointer. PSU countered back with a six-point run to take a 74-71 lead with 1:20 remaining. Out of a full timeout by Drexel, O'Neill hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 74. Penn State took a timeout and had an empty possession. Drexel, in turn, had an empty possession and PSU took control with 25.2 seconds remaining. Penn State was unable to score on its possession and gave Drexel to opportunity with 1.1 seconds on the clock. Penn State was able to block Drexel's attempt on the basket and forced overtime.
Penn State outscored Drexel, 12-4 in overtime. The Nittany Lions shot 4-for-8 and held the Dragons to just 2-for-7.

Drexel is set to return to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on December 4 to host Lehigh at 6 p.m. The Dragons then turn their attention to the Toyota Women's Big 5 Classic, which will be played at Villanova on December 6.
