NORFOLK, Va. – The Drexel women's basketball team could not hold off the Norfolk State Spartans on Wednesday night in Norfolk, Va. Norfolk State erased a 12-point deficit in fourth frame to defeat the Dragons, 68-56.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored 19 points 7-for-16 shooting. The senior shot 4-for-7 from deep and added four assists and three rebounds to the stat sheet. Baker scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half.
Chloe Hodges chipped in 13 points to the effort and grabbed six rebounds and six assists.
Drexel tied a season-high 10 treys on also a season-high 24 attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started with a defensive battle in the first quarter. The Dragons shot 3-for-14, while Norfolk State shot 5-for-16. The Spartans led the Dragons, 11-6, after 10 minutes of play. Deja Evans scored all six points for Drexel.
Drexel took the first lead of the game with 11 seconds remaining in the first half. Cara McCormack wrapped up Drexel's 21-point second quarter with a three-pointer to push the team's score to 27. Drexel went into the locker room with a one-point lead, 27-26. Hodges led the Dragons in scoring with 11 points. Hodges shot a perfect 3-for-3 from deep in the first half and also went 4-for-6 from the field.
Drexel entered the second half with a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and made two of those shots from long range. Drexel's 10-2 run to begin the second half led Norfolk State to call a timeout and send the game into a media timeout. Baker continued the scoring by tallying 11 points. Drexel shot 8-for-16 in the third quarter and sank five treys to outscore Norfolk State, 23-15. After three quarters, Baker led Drexel with 16 points, while Hodges tallied 13.
NSU started the fourth quarter with a 7-3 run and trimmed the deficit to just five, causing Drexel to call an early timeout. Out of the timeout, the Spartans earned an and-one and converted on the opportunity. The Spartans tied the game with 6:31 remaining hitting a layup. With both teams evened at 53, the game went scoreless for over two minutes when the Spartans took the lead with 4:25 remaining. After a turnover and NSU bucket to give the home team a four-point advantage, Drexel used its full timeout. After the Drexel timeout, NSU outscored Drexel, 11-3, to secure the victory.
