PHILADELPHIA - Drexel rallied from a 15-point deficit to tie the game, but Bryant went on to a 78-73 victory against the Dragons at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Yame Butler scored a season-high 28 points but it wasn't enough as Drexel fell to 5-4. Bryant (5-4) was led by Rafael Pinzon, who scored 31 points. Tonight's game was brought to you by United Bank of Philadelphia.
Bryant scored nine straight points in a 13-2 run to take what seemed like a commanding lead. When Connor Withers scored on a dunk with 13:31 to play, the lead grew to 15 points at 51-36. Drexel slowly chipped away as Butler got hot and the Bulldogs left some points at the line. Butler scored 25 of his 28 points in the second half and when he nailed a 3-pointer with 4:39 to play the game was tied at 60. Drexel tied it on two more occasions but could not get the lead. Bryant's Pinzon converted a 3-point play and after a turnover, scored on a lay-up giving the visitors a five-point lead. Drexel couldn't get any closer than three over the final minute.
Butler finished the game 5-for-6 from behind the arc and 11-for-17 overall. Kobe MaGee added 14 points, while Cole Hargrove scored 12. Both MaGee and Hargrove had seven rebounds.
Pinzon drained four 3-pointers, the only four the Bulldogs would make on the night. The Dragons held Bryant to just 4-for-17 from 3-point territory. Earl Timberlake had another big game against Drexel. He scored 23 points, had 12 rebounds and four assists.
Drexel took its only lead of the game late in the first half when MaGee drained a 3-pointer as the shot clock was expiring at the 1:57 mark. Bryant answered by scoring seven straight points down the stretch and went to halftime with a five-point lead at 37-32. Pinzon and Timberlake combined for 26 of the Bulldogs points.
The Dragons are back in action Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Center. The Dragons will face University City-rival Penn in the first game of the Big 5 Classic at 2 p.m.
