PHILADELPHIA - Cole Hargrove scored 17 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and rejected three shots as Drexel defeated Penn, 60-47, in the Big 5 Classic at Wells Fargo Center. The Dragons (6-4) used a stifling defensive effort in the second half to break open a close game.
Penn (3-6) scored the first four points in the second half to take a four-point lead, but Drexel answered with 10 straight points to take the lead for good. The Dragons went on a 16-2 run and held the Quakers to just one field goal over a stretch of more than nine minutes to open up a double-digit lead. The Quakers got back-to-back buckets by Nino Spinoso, but once again the Dragons had an answer. Hargrove scored five points during a 7-0 run as the Dragons won for the second straight year in their Big 5 Classic Game.
The Drexel defense held Penn to just 17 points and 29 percent shooting in the second half. The Quakers were 0-for-9 from behind the arc in the second half. On the other end, the Dragons shot 46 percent in the final 20 minutes and were 5-for-5 from the line. Penn had just two players score in the second half.
Hargrove posted his fourth double-double of the year. He had a double-double in all three Big 5 games this season. The junior was 7-for-10 from the floor in the contest. Kobe MaGee added 12 points, while Yame Butler added 10. The Dragons once again had a solid game on the glass. Drexel outrebounded the Quakers by 11. Hargrove had 11 of his 17 points in the second half, while MaGee scored eight in the final frame.
Spinoso led the Quakers with 21 points. Ethan Roberts scored 11 points, but was held to just 5-for-17 shooting. Michelangelo Oberti led Penn with nine rebounds.
