Dragons Fall to Saint Joseph's in Toyota Big 5 Classic

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team was defeated by the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 69-47 in the third place game of the program's first Toyota Big 5 Classic at the Finneran Pavilion on the campus of Villanova. The Dragons traded the lead with SJU seven times before the Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored a team-high 16 points. The senior shot 5-for-14 and added three rebounds.
Deja Evans finished the game with 12 points and added four rebounds, one steal and one block.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel and Saint Joseph's battled in the first quarter. Drexel started the game on a 9-3 run. Shortly after, SJU answered with a run of its own, scoring 10 straight points. After the two teams went on their respective runs, Drexel and Saint Joseph's traded blows, ending the quarter nearly even, 18-16 in favor of SJU.
The second quarter brought much of the same action. SJU outscored the Dragons, 17-14. Four Dragons checked into the scoring column in the second ten minutes of play. Baker led the Dragons with five, while Evans and Chloe Hodges scored four and three, respectively. Grace O'Neill rounded out Drexel's scorers with a pair of points.
In the third quarter, Baker scored six of Drexel's 12 points, going 3-for-6 from the field. However, Saint Joseph's scored 16 points, connecting on two treys.
Saint Joseph's pulled away in the fourth frame, outscoring Drexel 18-5. The Dragons could not deal with SJU's quick-moving offense and defense, shooting just 2-for-12 and allowing Saint Joseph's to shoot 8-for-12.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to face the Florida State Seminoles on December 15. Tipoff against the ACC opponent is slated for 2 p.m.
