Men's Basketball Ends Road Trip With 80-70 Loss at the College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston shot 57 percent in the second half and defeated Drexel, 80-70, on Saturday afternoon at TD Arena. Drexel fell to 15-10 overall and 8-4 in the CAA. The College of Charleston is now 9-3 in league play and 18-7 overall.
Drexel held a 41-40 lead early in the second half after Justin Moore found Amari Williams all alone for a fast break dunk. Charleston called timeout, and responded by scoring 14 of the next 17 points to take a 54-44 lead with 12:18 to play. Drexel answered as Williams scored six straight of his own to cut the lead to four. Once again Charleston ended the run with one of its own. This time, the Cougars scored eight straight points, including two 3-pointers to get the lead back into double figures. They held the lead the rest of the way. The Dragons fought down the stretch and had one last run in them. Yame Butler scored five points in a row, with a 3-pointer and a reverse layup, as the Dragons got within five. Charleston answered yet again, this time with seven straight points as it picked up the win and moved into a tie for first place in the CAA with UNCW. Drexel finds itself in a third place tie with multiple teams.
Amari Williams led the Dragons with 20 points and eight rebounds. He was 9-for-18 from the floor. Luke House added 12 points. Drexel shot well in the first half (.517) but struggled from deep throughout the day. The Dragons were just 5-for-19 from behind the arc.
Frankie Policelli had 22 points and tied a career-high with six 3-pointers for Charleston. Ante Brzovic had 17 of his 19 points in the second half. The Cougars made 13 3-pointers on the afternoon.
The teams played an entertaining first half as Drexel raced out to a 15-6 lead early. Panicelli sank two 3-pointers in a row, the second at the 7:37 mark, as Charleston took a 24-21 lead. The Dragons then used an 11-0 run to take the lead again as they forced Charleston into eight straight misses. Drexel's lead vanished in the final minute as Kobe Rogers converted a 3-point play and after a Butler offensive foul, Panicelli was at it again. The Stony Brook transfer hit his fifth 3-pointer of the half to even the score at 35-35.
Drexel returns home for its next two games beginning on Thursday night. The Dragons host Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel will then face first-year CAA member Campbell on Saturday afternoon.
