TOWSON, Md. – Chloe Hodges recorded the first double-double of her career, but it was not enough as Towson defeated the Drexel women's basketball team in overtime, 51-48, on Friday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
Hodges finished with a career-high 23 points and a career mark of 10 rebounds. The senior's point total was also a game-high. It is the first time in her career that Hodges recorded a double-double.
Jasmine Valentine tied a career-high of 11 points. Valentine also gathered eight rebounds. Grace O'Neill rounds out Drexel's top performers. The sophomore tallied seven points and pulled in 10 rebounds.
Drexel held the Tigers, who entered the game fourth in points per game in the CAA, to their second-lowest point total this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers grabbed an early lead after scoring 17 points in the first frame. The Tigers went on a 9-2 run to close the first quarter. Hodges led the Dragons in scoring in the first 10 minutes with five points. At the end of the first, Towson led 17-9.
In the second quarter, Drexel held TU to just six points while scoring 11. The Dragons kept Towson off the scoreboard for the final five minutes of the half. Hodges continued to carry the Drexel offense, adding four more points and pushing her total to nine.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Both teams scored 11 points. Drexel received another six points from Hodges, who went 3-for-4 from the field.
Drexel opened the fourth frame with a 10-0 run, forcing Towson to send the game into the early media timeout. However, Towson erased the nine-point Drexel lead with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. With 31 left on the clock, Laine McGurk was fouled underneath the basket and split the tries at the charity stripe. Towson called a timeout and elected to attempt to take the last shot. A floater by Kylie Kornegay-Lucas rattled off the rim as the clock ran to less than a second. Drexel used its final timeout with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation and advanced the ball up the court. The Dragons could not get a good look at the basket, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, both teams did not score a field goal, however, the Tigers converted on three more free throws than the Dragons did, which proved to be the difference maker. The Dragons went to the line twice and made both, while Towson earned eight shots and converted on five.
