Late Bucket by Valentine Lifts Drexel Past Delaware, 61-59

NEWARK, Del. - Jasmine Valentine converted a layup with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift Drexel over the Delaware Blue Hens, 61-59, at the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday afternoon. The victory secures the sweep of the Blue Hens in back-to-back years.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker led the Dragons with 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while Laine McGurk scored 13 and dished five assists in the contest.
Drexel outscored the Blue Hens for the first time in the game during the fourth quarter to help complete the victory. The Dragons outscored Delaware 16-7 in the final frame.
The Dragons shot 16-for-33 in the second half and closed the game on a 14-2 run in the final eight minutes of play
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Hens outscored the Dragons, 11-10, in the first quarter. The Dragons held Delaware to 5-for-12 from the floor and forced five turnovers. In addition, Drexel drew seven fouls in the first frame and went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. Baker led the Dragons after the first quarter with five points and three rebounds.
Drexel and Delaware traded the lead twice in the second frame. Each team went on six-point runs in the quarter. The Blue Hens scored 17 in the quarter, while the Dragons scored 14. Hetta Saatman and Laine McGurk paced Drexel in the second frame, scoring five points apiece.
In the third quarter, both teams were unstoppable. Drexel shot 9-for-19 and scored 21 points, while Delaware was 8-for-14 from the field and scored 24 points. Baker shot 4-for-5 for eight points. The Dragons entered the last quarter down by seven points, 52-45.
Drexel went on an eight-point run to cut into the deficit. Delaware was forced to call a timeout when Drexel trimmed the lead to just two points. With just under a minute remaining McGurk came away with a break-away steal and took the ball to the basket to even the score at 59. Delaware turned the ball over with 35.7 seconds remaining in regulation. With the clock winding down, Drexel put the ball in the hands of Valentine who drove to the basket and put the Dragons ahead with eight seconds remaining. Delaware called a timeout and took a three-pointer as the clock expired that did not fall.

The Dragons conclude their road trip on Friday, February 23. DU travels to West Long Branch, N.J., to take on the Monmouth Hawks. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
